Network and connections
Sony Ericsson Z550i is classified as a Tri-Band mobile phone, and is therefore able to operate on three different GSM frequencies: 900, 1800 and 1900 Mhz. As far as connectivity is concerned, this handset offers access to the EDGE network, in addition to the classic GPRS. Bluetooth technology proves to be of fundamental importance for file exchange and the use of various wireless accessories. For direct connection with a computer, the USB port is available instead. Sony Ericsson Z550i also features a TFT matrix display, with 262,000 colors and measuring 176 x 220 pixels. There is also a secondary external monochrome display of 128 x 36 pixels. The battery is good.
Design and features
Sony Ericsson Z550i falls into the category of clamshell mobile phones. The design features simple but elegant lines, which give it a compact and pleasant look. The integrated antenna helps preserve the handling ease of the device. It measures 87.5 millimeters in length, 45.4 millimeters in width and 20.5 millimeters in thickness. The weight is average: about 93 grams. The outer part of the body houses the secondary display and the camera. This model, finally, is available in Sterling Black or Pearl Copper colors.
Main features
In call mode it is possible to activate the speakerphone function, thanks to the convenient built-in speaker. In addition, by using the voice recorder, it is possible to store partial blocks of conversation or voice Memos. The multiconference function is present, which allows communication with multiple devices at the same time. Accessories such as the alarm clock, calculator and organizer are, as always, included. As far as messaging is concerned, Sony Ericsson Z550i supports all current standards: it is in fact able to receive and send SMS, MMS and e-mail, easily composed thanks to the T9 quick writing software. Memory is 20 MB, expandable via Memory Stick Micro.
Entertainment and multimedia
Sony Ericsson Z550i offers various customization options. It has polyphonic ringtones, screensavers and Java games (J2ME); new content can be downloaded through the built-in WAP browser. Sony Ericsson Z550i also proves to be an excellent multimedia entertainer. It is in fact equipped with an FM radio with Rds system and a music player, for playback of files in MP3, AAC and EAAC format, as well as video clips in MP4 and 3GP format. The model is fitted with a camera with a sensor with an effective resolution of 1.3 Megapixel. This device allows the capture of images of decent quality, at a maximum resolution of 1280x1024 pixels. The device is finally equipped with a 4x digital zoom and allows video recording.
