Sharp GX18 review
Network and connections
A good phone with satisfactory technical specifications and complete functionality. The Sharp GX18 has a GSM Dualband network receiver, on frequencies of 900 and 1800 MHz. Network coverage is good, but it does not offer guarantees for intercontinental travel. The internal modem with GPRS data traffic management allows browsing the Internet, opening WAP pages with the dedicated browser. To connect to other devices you can use Bluetooth, or the USB 2.0 data cable, also handy for syncing with a PC.
Design and features
A standard aesthetic, in the classic vertical Candybar style. The contrast between the silver and black colors makes it adaptable to any context. The front houses the screen, a TFT 128x160 pixel display, capable of showing up to 65K colors. Just below is the standard alphanumeric keypad, with small but perfectly usable keys. The phone's dimensions are truly compact, with a thickness of 11.5 mm and a weight of just 70 grams. The sales package includes the earphones and the data cable.
Main features
The GX18 is equipped with a proprietary platform. Every function is nonetheless intuitive and quick to use. It is also possible to install additional applications, thanks to Java support, allowing the device to be customized according to one's own needs. Support for T9 predictive text helps with quick text composition, making it fast to write SMS and multimedia messages, as well as E-mails (POP3 only). Of course, the classic organizer tools are present, such as a phonebook for contacts, a calendar for personal appointments, an alarm clock, and a currency converter. The voice section offers a voice recorder, support for multiconference calls, and the speakerphone.
Entertainment and multimedia
The section dedicated to entertainment is less notable. There is a digital camera with VGA resolution; image quality is approximate, but still useful when needed. It also allows recording short video clips, to be saved on the non-expandable 7 MB memory. For this reason, the music to carry around must be chosen carefully. The media player handles the playback of audio and video. Lastly, battery life is good, with an autonomy of 210 hours in Stand-by.
