Samsung i897 Captivate review
Network and connections
After the release of the resounding Galaxy S, Samsung decides to launch the enhanced version in collaboration with AT&T. As for network features, it remains virtually unchanged, with a GSM Quadband receiver, capable of guaranteeing optimal coverage in any situation. Dual Mode support is also present, to take advantage of UMTS networks. For the Internet, there is instead the internal HSDPA modem, extremely fast and high-performing. The HTML browser can therefore open pages with ease. Or you can connect to distributed networks, thanks to the integrated Wi-Fi antenna. Bluetooth is also present for file transfers, as well as the USB data output.
Design and features
The lines have been slightly revised, more elegant and refined with glossy surfaces on the front. On the front stands out the large 4-inch HVGA SuperAMOLED screen, equipped with Capacitive Touch Screen technology that allows for precise and optimal management of the device. The step forward made in this model concerns precisely the screen: it is in fact equipped with a gyroscope with a 6-axis sensor, like the brand new iPhone 4. This feature allows extreme sensitivity while using video games, for an even more exciting experience. Just below is a clickable multifunction directional pad, together with dedicated keys for content management.
Main functions
Google's Android OS platform is implemented in favor of multimedia content and execution speed, also thanks to the 1 GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor. You can therefore use programs such as YouTube, Facebook and Google Maps with stability, as well as many other interesting applications including Digital Compass and Instant Messaging. Wide customization possibilities thanks to Java support. Contact list, appointment organizer, calculator and other management utilities are already included. Simplified writing helps in composing messages, from SMS to longer E-mails. It is also possible to correctly open Office and PDF attachments thanks to the dedicated readers. A reader for RSS Feeds is also included. As for voice functions, there are instead the speakerphone, the voice recorder and support for video calling.
Entertainment and multimedia
Even in leisure moments, the Samsung i897 Captivate is able to fully satisfy the user. It is in fact equipped with a 5 megapixel camera, capable of delivering excellent quality images in any condition. This is also thanks to dedicated functions for even more precise capture, even when recording short videos. The GPS receiver is handy for turning the phone into a satellite navigator. Or again the multimedia player to faithfully reproduce audio and video files. Memory space has also been expanded, with a full 16 GB available and further expandable up to 32 GB via microSD cards. In short, a concentration of advanced technology for lovers of innovation. Absolutely one of the best devices on the market.
