Samsung A687 Strive review
Network and connections
The US carrier AT&T launches a device with an original color, aimed at the young audience fond of writing messages. The network receiver is a GSM Quadband, capable of guaranteeing optimal coverage in any area of the world, thanks also to UMTS support. Internet browsing is fast, with a GPRS modem for packet data traffic. The dedicated WAP/HTML browser will open any web page without problems. To exchange files with other compatible devices, Bluetooth is used instead. Or else the USB 2.0 data cable to sync directly with a PC. Wi-Fi antenna is missing.
Design and features
The compact vertical Slider structure encloses everything in a sturdy body that's practical to handle. The rounded edges offer an ergonomic grip, allowing the device to be held comfortably in the palm of one hand. The dimensions are indeed compact, with a thickness of 14.6 mm and a weight of 113 grams. The front houses the large display, a 2.6-inch TFT with display of up to 256,000 colors. A multifunction key also helps with menu navigation, along with dedicated keys. Inside, the QWERTY keyboard allows quick handling of any type of text. The retail package includes a headset and a data cable.
Main features
The proprietary platform is designed to offer advanced features to the user, while keeping management and customization simple. But that's not all, since Java support allows the installation of compatible software for expansion. Support for Office documents allows easy management of E-mail attachments. These can be composed quickly, thanks to predictive text that helps a lot with message texts. The purely telephone-related aspect is no less impressive either, with a good-quality speakerphone, voice recorder, and multiconference support.
Entertainment and multimedia
To complete the technological offering of this A687 STRIVE, Samsung's designers have equipped the device with a 2-megapixel camera. It is really handy for taking quality photographs whenever needed, thanks also to Flash, Zoom and other dedicated functions. You can also record short videos, which can then be saved to the 80 MB internal memory, further expandable with microSD cards up to 32 GB. The multimedia player, on the other hand, allows playback of your favorite audio and video files. The GPS satellite navigator is also handy. Battery life is standard, with 250 hours of Stand-by.
