Nokia 7600 review

The new Nokia 7600 stands out esthetically for being one of the few cell phones with square proportions, rather than rectangular ones. The fact that it has two rounded sides and interchangeable covers with a "skin effect" to the touch makes it truly original, as is customary for Nokia products.

But, looks aside, our protagonist also has a lot to offer on the technological front, as it is one of the few UMTS phones on sale in our country, although it cannot be used to make video calls.

The technical specifications reveal important features such as: the TFT display with 128x160 pixels and 65,000 colors, customizable polyphonic True Tones ringtones (that is, ones that can be created starting from any sound source, a song rather than a recorded sound), the XHTML-compatible WAP 2.0 browser, speakerphone, Java, Bluetooth, infrared port, voice call and memo, SMS (concatenated and with drawings) with T9, the e-mail client, MMS, SIM Toolkit, the Pop Port connection and games, all manageable through the now-famous Series 40 interface.

Among the standout characteristics we cannot fail to mention: the 29 MB dynamic memory, the VGA camera with self-timer and the ability to shoot clips, video streaming and the MP3 and AAC file player, as well as, of course, data transmission that can reach speeds of 384 Kbps on 3G networks.

Let's now talk about the strengths of the Nokia 7600, which are both esthetic and substantial; esthetic because it is an unmistakable cell phone with compact dimensions (much more than it seems in photos), with a keyboard split into two rows that users say is nonetheless comfortable; substantial because multimedia lovers and those who want to always keep up with the times will be able to have fun with audio and video files, with Java and above all with access to UMTS networks, which as we know guarantee fast data transfer and true multitasking (that is, it is possible to use several functions at the same time, unlike GSM which at most allows you to make calls and exchange SMS at the same time). Other strong points are ease of use, customizability and connectivity in every way currently possible, with the further advantage of the Pop Port connection and therefore the use of accessories compatible with other models (starting with the battery, the same one as the 3650).

Among the flaws we feel we must report without doubt the lack of the third GSM band, now present even on economy phones, the inability to make and receive video calls (a particular choice, perhaps due to the uncertainty that still surrounds the third generation), and finally the lack of memory expansion that would be really convenient in a device capable of handling even heavy multimedia files, in terms of bytes.

Who do we ultimately recommend buying the Nokia 7600 to? To those who want to stand out and act as pioneers (a bit like what happened years ago, when GSM phones were starting to spread and people competed to have the most particular phone rich in functions, perhaps not even usable on our domestic networks, that is, when the cell phone was still a status symbol), while still wanting to rely on the reliability of products from the Finnish company, which has always been generous with software updates that gradually improve their performance.
