The Nokia 1600 is a Dual Band phone with a clean, elegant design featuring chrome details and a built-in antenna, simplified menus and navigation, and speaking clock and alarm functions, whose minimal features make it a phone suited to users who mainly need a tool for making calls. The display, which supports more than 65,000 colors, has a resolution of 96 x 68 pixels, with a graphic demo mode showing the phone's features with and without a SIM card, and full-screen animated color screensavers. Voice and reception quality are excellent, thanks to AMR (Adaptive Multi Rate) technology, which allows operators to easily and inexpensively improve voice quality on their networks.

The battery is a 900 mAh lithium-ion unit, providing up to 450 hours of standby time and about 5.5 hours of talk time. The Nokia 1600's features also include 20-voice polyphonic ringtones, 3 games, 200 memory locations, vibration, speakerphone, a stopwatch, and interchangeable covers to refresh the phone's look from time to time. Writing SMS messages is easy, with a local input method and an 'undo' function in the SMS editor, useful for fixing accidental deletions and improving efficiency of use.
